General Advice

The majority of illnesses encountered when travelling abroad are:

  • Due to sunshine - heat stroke, sunburn. Keep safe in the sun by liberally applying factor 15 or higher sun screen regularly. Avoid over-exposure to the sun at peak times of the day. Remember to drink lots of (non-alcoholic) fluids to avoid dehydration.
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting illnesses. These usually occur as a result of eating different foods and poor hygiene. Check if the local water is safe to drink and if in doubt stick to bottled water. Wash all fruit and veg prior to eating.
  • Infectious diseases. See vaccinations. Use appropriate insect repellants to avoid mosquito bites.

It would be advisable to take a selection of appropriate medication with you. This may include anti-diarrhoeal tablets, rehydration sachets and simple pain killers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. Do not forget to take your own regular medicines with you as well.

Vaccinations

It is important when travelling abroad to check that you are fully vaccinated for the trip that you are planning. The Practice Nurse can advise you and help you arrange your vaccinations. Please complete a "travel form" which is available from reception. This will ask you for details regarding the countries you are planning to visit, duration of the trip and departure date. The nurse can then research what vaccines are required and will contact you to make arrangements.

If your trip involves travelling into remote areas where specialised vaccines are required, eg. Yellow Fever, you may have to make an appointment with a specialist travel clinic such as those provided at Monklands Hospital or Glasgow Airport.

We do not charge for holiday vaccinations but you will have to pay for your prescription if you currently incur a charge. Unfortunately Malaria Prophylaxis is NOT provided under the NHS and private prescriptions will be used where necessary.

Please note that vaccines can take time to work and may need to be given a minimum of 4 weeks prior to departure. As soon as you know your departure dates, please get in touch with us
